Jorge Mario Garcia is a Cuban born free-diving and spear fishing expert. As an athlete he formed part of the Cuban National Team who recognized him as the deepest diving competitor of his time. Jorge Mario has been the Cuban spear fishing Champion five times (1976 – 1983). In the year 1989 he broke his first Static Apnea World Record. In succession he broke the World Record for Constant Ballast 9 times between the years 1990 to 1994.

He was born in the city of Camaguey, 100 miles away from the Sea. Every year my family used to go Varadero duringvacations to visit my cousins. Varadero is the most beautiful beach of Cuba, and probably one of the most wonderful beachesin the World. There, I had my first “close encounter” with the Sea. It would be a lasting relation of Love for the rest of my life.

He started to practice underwater hunting when I was 9 years old. Immediately, this activity became a sort of obsession for me.

. In 1976, when I was 24 , I won the National Championship of Spearfishing held in Guardalabarca, Oriente. Usually the most experienced athletes develop their talents between 25 and 40 because to be experienced in the knowledge about the different species of fishes  and oceans require a lot of practice.

. He was the Cuban National Champion five times between 1976-1983.

As a member of the Cuban National Team, I was recognized as the deepest diving athlete thanks to my aptitude to fish breath holding dive. I could be keeping spearfishing  until 132 feet (40mt) during 4 /5 hours at 132 feet (40mt). In 1978, during a test, He got the scale of 171 feet (52m) in Constant Ballads.

. In 1981, during the First Festival of Submarine Photography (FOTOSUB) held in Isla de Pinos, Cuba, I made my first important record just with fins.

It was 191 feet (58mt). In this event, there were personalities like Luigi Ferrara, President and Founder of TECHNISUB; Jacques Dumas, President of CMAS, and Rino Gamba, Director of the Scientific Committee of CMAS.

. In 1989, at  37,  I established my First World Record of Static Apnea:  5 minutes & 34 seconds (5’34”).

. After this success, I broke 9 world records (1990-1994) in constant ballast, no fins, no mask.

. In July 1993, he could descend 241 feet (73 mt) in Varadero Beach, the place where he had started underwater hunting. It was a very special event because my friend Umberto Pelizzari, the famous World Record Free Diving, travelled from Italy to Cuba to be there in that occasion.

. The highest of my marks was the 244 feet (74 mt). He got it in Marina Hemingway, Havana, in the Summer of 1994. Some of these records belonged to the Cuban athlete Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras and Umberto Pelizari, the Rest is History .
